WRSC- BARTS – HOW TO JOIN IN
15 SEPTEMBER 2024
This year Bart's Bash takes place on Sunday 15 September and WRSC has registered to take part.
This amazing global event allows for funds to be raised either for the Andrew Simpson Foundation, or for local causes such as club projects which relate to the objectives of the foundation. (https://www.bartsbash.com/)
This year we are raising funds for our club, with the objective of enabling /encouraging more of our young people to get out on the water, especially since we now have some 63 member children. We are fortunate to have Mark Robinson leading the Youth Development and are also pleased to announce that the Committee has now approved Oliver Robinson as Youth Captain.
We encourage all club members to take part in this amazing event which is suitable for both experienced members and those new to sailing. Don’t worry if you have never raced before as this is a great opportunity to get started.
Here are some details:
WRSC Barts Bash Race – 11 O’clock
• Adult sailors – The adult race entries will be first to start at 11 O’clock prompt.
• Junior / Youth members (9-18) – You will also take part in the 11 O’clock race either individually or as family double handed sailing, but with a separate start to the adults.
• Families with younger children – You can also take part, providing the parent is helming by joining in with the Youth start.
• Results - Our club results will be submitted to qualify for the global Barts Bash Race. You will all be able to see your personal global position a few days later, on the Barts Bash website, once they have collated the results from clubs across the world.
Here’s what you need to know:
• Registration / Fee - You must register to take part. Registration will be in the club house from 10am on the day. All those joining in will be asked to pay a registration fee of an amount of their choosing (We suggest a minimum of £5 per entry – individual or family).
• Payment / Sponsorship - Payment can be by cash or card at the registration desk and all members are encouraged to raise sponsorship from friends and family in advance. (A sponsorship form is attached). Non-sailing members can also consider contributing if desired.
• Race briefing / Prompt start – At 10.40 there will be a race briefing on the decking. The race will start at 11am prompt so please arrive in plenty of time to be ready.
• Prizes - All our youth entries (up to age 18) will receive a prize of a box of ‘Celebrations’ (or similar) and a ‘certificate’ for taking part in the racing. The top 3 individuals / and or family younger sailors will get a ‘Tub of Celebrations’ rather than a box and a ‘certificate’ of their achievement.
• BBQ lunch - Weather permitting, we will have a BBQ lunch for which WRSC will provide salads, accompaniments etc but we suggest members bring their own meat according to preference for cooking on the BBQ. If the weather looks poor, we will inform everyone to bring a packed lunch.
• Family sailing - In the afternoon, apart from series racing as normal, we encourage families to get on the water with their younger members using club boats if need be. Members will be asked to please be tolerant with those not used to being on the water. Those members currently using club boats should please give a priority to allowing out younger members to use them.
• Success - The measure of success will be how many of our 63 children take part in the day.
• Going forward - All those of Youth age, i.e. 9-18 are encouraged to be involved going forward and for those who do commit to this, we will use some of the funds to get T-shirts printed with the club logo. Mark and Oliver will follow up all the youth sailors taking part, to help them stay involved with their exciting Youth Development Programme.
• Promoting the event - We will be promoting the event in the Wakefield Express and encourage any external families interested in sailing, to come and watch, and find out more about WRSC. Please would members attending be prepared to chat with any visitors to share how the club works and encourage them to find out more, by pointing them to a Committee Member.
• Club Boats – we have a small number of club boats available for member use which will be rigged for the event. This will be on a first come, first served basis, for the race, but will be more broadly available to be shared later in the day.
Important - Please could you let Tim H know if you will need to use a club boat and whether single or double handed (email below).
Any questions – Please drop Tim Hattersley an email if you have any questions at honsec@wrsc.org.uk
